DNA Studies Trace Jewish Priestly Lineage From Biblical Times
Scientists have discovered a gene present in Aaron, the first high priest (kohen) of the Jewish people, which passed down from generation to a group of today’s Jewish population bearing priestly descent. The gene is found on the Y chromosome, which is inherited only from the father. Therefore, all kohanim men should, in theory, have almost identical Y chromosomes. This hypothesis was tested at the Haifa Center in 1997, revealing the same features of the Y chromosome (YAP-) in 98.5 percent of kohanim. Researchers place the original kohen – the first common ancestor – about 3,300 years ago, which reminds us of the first priestly family.
